Vote Now: What Are The Best Tablet Apps Of 2015?

written by

The Tabby Awards presents the finalists for the best consumer tablet apps and games of 2015.

In 2008, as rumors of an Apple slate-like computer began to surface, I was taken an idea.

These slates, or tablets, could fundamentally reshape media as we know it.

Apple would go on to unveil its tablet—the iPad—in 2010. Since then more than 250 million iPads have been sold and like the iPhone before it have spawned a host of competitors and copycats. Nearly 76.1 million tablets were shipped in the first quarter of 2015.

My vision in 2008 was that every household in the United States should be shipped a tablet, free of charge. Those tablets could then be automatically updated every morning with the latest news articles and video and serve as the de facto replacement for newspapers.

My vision of the future turned out to be wildly underestimated.

Tablets, of course, have not been the panacea to cure the ills of the newspaper industry. Instead the conglomeration and proliferation of smartphones and tablets—mobile devices—have spawned an entirely new era of computing of which humanity has never seen. Media is being transformed, slowly in some quarters, more rapidly in others. The spread and dissemination of information and communication has never been more instantaneous. Twitter has become the front page of the world and Facebook has broken down all barriers of communication.

The growth of the tablet market has not quite been what industry prognosticators predicted. Tablet sales, for any variety of reasons, have not matched those of smartphones. Tablet sales growth has diminished as larger smartphones (like the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note series) have come to dominate the market. Still, hundreds of millions of tablets will be shipped and sold in 2015, a remarkable achievement for a seemingly second-tier device category.

App developers have certainly embraced the tablet market and created insightful—and often stunning—digital representations of handheld media. Games like The Walking Dead or Agent Alice have captivated fans while new digital magazines like Flipboard really do serve as aggregated newspapers for the digital age.

Finding The Best Tablet Apps Of 2015

It is with this innovation in mind that ARC presents the finalists of The Tabby Awards, an annual competition to find the best tablet apps, as a media sponsor. The finalist for The Tabby Awards were announced this week and the winners will be selected by a panel of judges (including Doron Reuveni, CEO of ARC parent company Applause) and a public vote by app users around the world.

The finalist come from four different continents and 16 countries and span 11 Android categories and 24 for the iPad. Finalists include heavy hitters like A+E, Adobe, Disney and Yahoo.

Take a look at the full list below and then head over to The Tabby Awards website to vote for your pick of each category. Voting lasts until June 14th.

Have any favorites on the list? What do you think was a deserving but excluded app? Let us know in the comments.
